This week we had to watch a film of our choice from the list provided, and analyze it based on its film design and how it fits Vignelli’s idea of design fundamentals. I chose chose to watch Alien, because I was able to record it at home, and then watch it online through my home DVR, even though I wasn’t there!
As the opening titles are shown, they are displayed in a very simple font, making it easy for the viewers to read, and as Vignelli puts it, the words don’t “scream at you.” The typography was also very minimalistic.
Using backlighting, the filmmakers were able to create a more spooky effect and make the set seem more space-like.
By using proportions, the filmmakers were able to create the illusion of a small space craft next to the large planet of Saturn.
